A Jeep making a u-turn on the Sea to Sky Highway at Lions Bay led to a major collision at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, as thousands were trying to get to the Live at Squamish Festival.
The Jeep, which was leaving Lions Bay, was hit by a southbound Cube van. Five people were taken to Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver with serious injuries.
Speeding Lexus flips on Sea to Sky Highway at Culliton Creek
Speed is suspected in a factor in a serious single car accident on the Sea to Sky Highway just south of Culliton Creek Bridge on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 3:30 p.m.
A 1995 Lexus SC400 is alleged to have been travelling at excessive speed south bound on the highway when the driver lost control, leading to the car leaving the road, hitting a tree, and coming to rest on its roof. The tree was sheared off and fell across the highway.
The 23-year-old driver is being charged with undue care and attention. He and his 20-year-old and 21-year-old male companions, also Vancouver residents, are lucky to be alive after this serious incident, said police. All three received minor injuries and no other vehicles were involved.
Police would like to remind drivers to slow down and drive safely.
Impaired driver rolls truck at Function Junction
Police were called to the scene when a red truck rolled over Aug. 28 at 4 a.m. on the Sea to Sky Highway at Function Junction. Police spoke to the driver and suspected alcohol might be a factor in the accident. He was arrested for impaired driving. The man, a 34-year-old Whistler resident, was taken to the Whistler Healthcare Centre by ambulance.
Erratic motorcyclist nabbed in Brackendale with bike stolen in 2008
The RCMP's helicopter, Air 1, was following a northbound motorcyclist on the Sea to Sky Highway from Shannon Falls, south of Squamish, on Aug. 22 at 5:30 p.m.
Squamish RCMP were contacted and told the motorcyclist was travelling erratically at high speeds.
Police units moved into the area and one attempted to pull the motorcycle over but it fled, weaving through traffic. No pursuit was attempted as the helicopter had the suspect in view.
The driver turned through side streets in an attempt to evade police, but he was followed to Brackendale, where he finally ditched the bike and ran off on foot. Police arrested the man in a wooded area near Dryden Road.
A 22-year-old Vancouver resident was arrested without incident. He was driving a motorcycle stolen in Squamish in 2008 and did not have a driver's license.
The suspect is being charged with Dangerous Driving of a motor vehicle, criminal flight, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and drug possession.
Paragliding equipment worth thousands stolen from stalled truck
Two full paragliding kits valued at between $10,000 and $15,000 were stolen from a vehicle on Squamish Valley Road near Magee Road sometime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23.
The vehicle — a dark green 2000 Dodge Caravan — had broken down and when the owner returned to the scene he found that a door had been pried open and items stolen.
Two full paragliding setups, including two gliders and harnesses along with climbing gear, were taken. The two paragliders were both packed into their own back bags. One is a Nova carbon, royal blue and white, and the other is an Ozone Octane, that is red, yellow and blue.

There were 65 reports of bike thefts in Whistler from July 1 to Aug. 28, up from 58 reports in the same period in 2011. More than this number of bikes could have been stolen, as some were multiple thefts in a single report.
