Two crashes on the same day, Sept. 8, resulted in Sunday afternoon Highway 99 frustration that lasted well into the evening.

The first crash happened at just after 2 p.m. and closed the entire highway, while a second crash stopped southbound traffic again four hours later.

Sgt. Wayne Pride of the Squamish RCMP said the first crash involved a northbound male motorbike rider who veered into oncoming traffic five kilometres south of Porteau Cove.

"He collided with two southbound vehicles before coming to a rest in the centre of the road," said Pride. "A second southbound motorcyclist travelling behind the second southbound vehicle collided with that (vehicle)."

Pride said a woman, who was taken from the crash scene by air ambulance, was driving the southbound motorbike. Dealing with the injuries and investigating the crash required closure of the north and southbound highway lanes for more than an hour.

A male motorbike driver refused to give a breath sample at the scene. The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Pride expects to lay charges and the male motorbike driver could be facing a 24-hour suspension of his driving license.

At 5:50 p.m. the highway was closed again after a 37-year-old Vancouver resident lost control of his vehicle just south of Porteau. Pride said the out-of-control vehicle crashed into three other southbound vehicles.

"It appears the driver may have had a medical condition that caused him to loose control," said Pride. "He was taken to Lions Gate (Hospital). There was some vehicle damage but it appears injuries were minor in nature."

Southbound traffic was disrupted for about an hour and a half while the scene of the second incident was cleaned up.
