Blackcomb Mountain to close after WSSF
Although it’s hard to imagine with the Easter crowds packing the slopes and the whole town revving up for the ninth Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF), the ski season is winding down in Whistler. The snowline is retreating uphill, local shops are swapping skis and boards with bikes, and goggle tans are once again in fashion.
As the season winds down, so do Whistler-Blackcomb’s mountain operations.
The Creekside gondola and base operations will be the first to close up on Sunday, April 18 after the first weekend of the WSSF.
"We do this for two reasons," explained Stuart Rempel, the vice president of marketing and sales for Whistler-Blackcomb. "The first is that we lose the ski out down that side. And after the 18 th the traffic declines significantly. Instead we will focus our attention on the Whistler Village Gondola."
The Food and Beverage Department has yet to decide whether or not to close Dusty’s as well as the other Creekside amenities.
Blackcomb Mountain officially closes for the season the following weekend, on April 25, after the WSSF has wrapped up. A new terrain park will be created on Whistler Mountain by the T-bars to serve skiers and riders until the mountain closes on June 6.
The last day of winter operations for Whistler Mountain is June 6, and Blackcomb Mountain will reopen the following day for summer glacier skiing and riding, as well as a number of camps.
Blackcomb is scheduled to close its summer operations on Aug. 1.
