Creekside to chose own Idol

$1,000 up for grabs

First there was American Idol, then Canadian Idol and even Pemberton Idol. Nadio Hachey, owner of Joey Chan’s Chinese eatery, decided it was time Creekside got in on the action.

"The event is taking place to highlight the talent that Whistler has to offer," Hachey said.

Hachey, along with Steve Jiu Productions, will host the inaugural Creekside Idol June 18 and 25 and July 2, with finalists competing July 25 for $1,000 in cash and prizes.

Singers will compete in one of two categories: juniors 17 years and under, and adults 18 years and over.

The adult category winner will take home $500 cash and the junior winner $250. Other prizes will be awarded to runners up.

Competitors must prepare one song for the competition. Their performance will be judged on three factors: stage presence, voice and song choice.

"I find the person that interacts with the crowd gets a lot of points," said Jiu of his experience hosting Pemberton Idol.

"Being really comfortable in front of a mic, and practice and confidence really pays off too."

To accompany competitors’ performances, they can either choose from a provided karaoke CD book or bring their own prerecorded track. Jiu hosts karaoke every Monday at the Crystal Lounge where he invites competitors for a trial run.

Three adult and three junior finalists will compete July 25.
