David Suzuki headlines recreation conference

Sustainable recreation on the agenda as Squamish hosts recreation conference

One of the most sought speakers in Canada is dropping in on Squamish on Friday, May 22 as the town plays host to the annual Recreation Facilities Association of B.C. Conference.

The conference is for operators of arenas, auditoriums, community centres, pools, stadiums, parks and other recreation facilities, but the public is welcome for Dr. David Suzuki's presentation on "Recreation: A Conscientious Footprint to the Future."

Dr. Suzuki is an award-winning broadcaster, the voice of the CBC's The Nature of Things , and the founder of the CBC radio science program Quirks and Quarks . He won a United Nations award for his eight-part series A Planet for the Taking , and received international praise for other series, The Secret of Life and The Brain . He has produced two documentary series on the environment, From Naked Ape to Superspecies and It's a Matter of Survival.

While that would be enough to define most careers, Dr. Suzuki has also written or co-written 43 books, founded the David Suzuki Foundation to focus on environmental campaigns, and spoken to millions as a public speaker.

It's fair to say that he's also one of the most sought after speakers in Canada, combining his background in science and journalism with his natural enthusiasm for the topics he discusses. The last time he made a presentation in Sea to Sky corridor, four years ago, the last in a series of prominent speakers in the Sustainability Speaker Series, he helped to launch the Whistler 2020 process whereby Whistler would being to measure and mitigate its cumulative impacts on the environment, while attempting to adhere to the four core principles of The Natural Step sustainability framework.

Dr. Suzuki will speak at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Squamish Adventure Centre and Brennan Park Recreation Centre for $35 plus tax, or by calling 604-815-5084.
