While banks are on the alert and a suspect was arrested two weeks ago, another file was reported last week. According to Whistler RCMP, $300 was withdrawn from a victim's account on June 8, marking the 17th case of debit card fraud reported to the RCMP in Vancouver.
The skimming operation, which involved using counterfeit card scanners at Whistler businesses that recorded card and PIN numbers, has resulted in over $30,000 in withdrawals, with the banks covering those losses.
RCMP are reminding people to check their debit card statements for suspicious activity. All local banks have cancelled cards they believe may have been compromised.
Known car thief suspected in latest car theft
Although it's slowed down since a rash of car thefts in December and January, vehicles are continuing to go missing in Whistler and Sea to Sky. The latest theft occurred at a construction site on Squaw Valley Crescent on June 15, identified as a red 1991 Honda Civic with licence plate 147 LBD. The owner parked his vehicle in his regular spot in the morning and left his keys with his lunch box. If anyone has any information, they should call the RCMP at 604-932-3044.
The RCMP are warning that a prolific car thief is back in the Whistler area, whom they believe is responsible for the latest theft.

Dennis James Russell of Squamish pleaded guilty to Theft Over, Possession of a Stolen Credit Card, and a stolen Playstation Portable last week in relation to charges stemming from various auto thefts in January and February 2009. He was sentenced to 15 months, with three months for time served.
RCMP investigate restaurant break-in
Sometime after hours on June 13 a thief or thieves broke into Boston Pizza in Creekside. The front door was pried open and a computer was taken.
The RCMP are looking for information at 604-932-3044.
