THUMBS UP Kerry and Ginny Dennehy dip their toes in the Atlantic Ocean at the end of their cross-Canada bike ride and fundraiser for mental health treatment.

Dipping their toes in the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Spear, Newfoundland ten days ago may have symbolized the end of the Dennehys' cross-Canada bike ride — a physical, momentous moment marking the end of 8,000 kilometres.

But the journey doesn't end until they come home to Whistler on Thursday, Aug. 29.

The grand finale of the Enough is Enough bike ride, a three month cross-country campaign undertaken by Kerry and Ginny Dennehy with a goal of raising awareness and funds, while removing the stigma of mental health struggles, truly marks the end of the summer campaign.

"The finale is going to be important because it's our hometown," said Kerry of Whistler and the support they have had here for more than a decade since losing their teenage son Kelty to suicide in 2001.

"The reception we got from people (across Canada) was amazing. It was more than we ever imagined. The number of people that are touched by mental illnesses, whether they've lost someone directly in their lives, or whether they just know somebody, it's incredible."

When the final results come in, Dennehy said they would be close to raising the $2 million campaign goal for the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation.

Prior to this campaign, the foundation has raised more than $5 million.

The finale kicks off in Vancouver on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at Terry Fox Plaza, by BC Place. It begins at noon and Ginny and Kerry will be speaking about their journey, the people they met along the way and their message of hope in the midst of mental health challenges.

At 1 p.m. the Dennehys will begin a bike ride to Squamish where they will spend the night.

A community rally at the Squamish Youth Resource Centre will be held that night from 6 to 8 p.m. The centre is located at 1135 Carson Place, behind Howe Sound Secondary School.

The next morning they will ride up to Whistler with an entourage and plan to arrive at Whistler Olympic Plaza at noon on Thursday, Aug. 29.

There will be a ribbon cutting and cake. All are invited to attend and welcome the Dennehys home.
