There is money to be made and fame to be earned by chasing and scaring bears.
It isn't only Whistler that looked to Mammoth's Steve Searles for inspiration, Walt Disney Studios is looking to make a fictional movie based on the ex-trapper and hunter's life.
Searles has made a name for himself with his aggressive bear aversion conditioning techniques — a version of which are being tested by Whistler RCMP this year.
He has now signed a contract with Disney selling the rights to his life story for an undisclosed amount. The corporation has hired two screenwriters who have been spending time with Searles learning the finer points of scaring bears.
According to the Mammoth media, the Searles story will be a fictional drama/comedy, with a PG rating, by Disney Touchstone Productions.
Searles thought it was a practical joke when Disney first contacted him. The screenwriters have also interviewed the Mammoth Lakes police chief for the story.
