Whistler is going to the dogs.

Every year the Whistler Dog Parade and Dogfest is a huge draw for local and visiting bipeds and quardrapeds, and as a result it has become a signature event of the World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

It’s the fifth annual this year, and shaping up to be biggest and furriest ever.

The 2002 Dogfest lineup includes favourites like the Dog Parade, the Best Dog Costume contest, the Dog & Owner Look-A-Like Contest, the Chaotic Canines Flyball Team, and a number of dog-related booths.

"We expect to host up to 200 doggie participants this year," says Puppy Zone Day Care and Adventure Centre owner and Dogfest sponsor Tammy Huculak.

The booths and sampling area are located in Mountain Square and will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on April 20. The Dog Parade starts at The Puppy Zone at 3 p.m. and winds through the village, before winding up in Mountain Square. You can register your dog for the parade between 2 and 3 p.m. at The Puppy Zone.

Judging for the costume and look-a-like contests will take place between 3:15 and 3:45 p.m., at which point the Chaotic Canines Flyball Team begins its presentation.

"Whistler is such a huge dog town," says Doug Perry, the head of the World Ski and Snowboard Festival. "I think we have more dogs per capita than any town in the world.

"There’s always a lot going on during the festival, but this has become one of the most popular events."

The money raised from participation in the parade, and proceeds from the event will go towards the WAG Way Shelter, which provides care for homeless animals in the Sea to Sky area. They provide medical attention, food and attention to the animals, and are a no-kill shelter.
