A wildfire that raged near Pemberton for much of the summer has been fully contained, according to the BC Wildfire Service.
The Elaho wildfire, located approximately 67 kilometres west of Pemberton, was discovered June 14 and burned for more than 10 weeks before fire crews managed to fully contain it this week.
Due to the risk of falling trees and rolling debris, the Squamish Forest Service Road remains closed to the public at the 27 kilometre mark. Firefighters will stay on the site to monitor the fire for any hotspots.
At its peak, the lightning-caused fire covered an estimated area of 12,523 hectares, and, along with the nearby Boulder Creek fire, blanketed Whistler and much of the Sea to Sky in smoke on certain days in July, resulting in an air quality advisory being issued for the region.
Meanwhile, the Boulder Creek blaze, located approximately 23 kilometres northwest of Pemberton Meadows, remains active. At press time, the fire was 75-per-cent contained. Crews will return to work on the fire when the potential of a slide decreases, according to the BC Wildfire Service.
As of Aug. 21, an area closure was amended to the fire perimeter only. Access to the Upper Lillooet Forest Service Road is restricted to the 37.5-kilometre mark, although the Hurley Forest Service Road is open for public travel.
There remains no access to the Meager and Keyhole Hot Springs.
