Embark on a photographic journey

Feel the travel bug coming on? If a vacation isn't in the budget, make your way to the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Friday to check out the Night of the Nomads.

Feel the travel bug coming on? If a vacation isn't in the budget, make your way to the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Friday to check out the Night of the Nomads.

Hosted by Late and Unique Nighttime Alternatives (LUNA), the event features one of Whistler's very own nomads, Lena Rowat, who will share Legs to Logan: A Wilderness Journey on Skis from Vancouver to the Top of Canada , a short film that documents her 2,700-kilometre ski expedition.

You'll also have a chance to win some great prizes through a silent auction, like a bus tour of Europe, a trip through East Asia or some stellar travel gear. Tour companies Intrepid, Busabout, Moose Travel Network and Hostelling International will be on-hand to showcase their adventures. Northland Medical Clinic will be offering travel advice and adventurers will be able to test their travel savvy and share stories with fellow travelers.

"Night of the Nomads is going to light a fire in people to see parts of the world they haven't seen before" LUNA Community Event Coordination Trainee, Jessica Jones, said in a recent press release. "It's going to be impossible to walk out the door at the end of the night and not have a mental list of at least three places you can't wait to see and a good idea of how to get there."

Night of the Nomads takes place on Friday, March 19 in the Fairmont Chateau's Frontenac Ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Anyone interested in bidding on auction items should bring a credit card, as payment will be accepted at the end of the evening by PayPal. Entry is $7 or $5 with a LUNA member card. Tickets include a chance to win take-home travel prizes. Plus, the first 40 people to buy tickets from Whistler's Foto Source will be entered into a draw for a Lonely Planet book. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Get 'em while they're hot

The hottest (artistic) ticket at Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival is the Pro Photo Showdown, and this year promises to be no exception, with a roster of six talented photographers selected to battle it out for top spot - and a $10,000 cash prize - on Thursday, April 22.

For the 13 th annual competition, organizers have selected Jeremy Koreski, Brian Bielmann, Grant Gunderson, Yves Garneau, Mason Mashon and Erik Seo to create and present a nine-minute curated slideshow that showcases and celebrates the craft of action sport photography. And since these pros all come from a variety of backgrounds - some specialize in surf, others in ski and some dabble in a bit of every sport - the audience can expect to see a range of photos in the show.

Tickets usually sell-out quickly, so get yours ahead of the pack at wssf.com.

Time to tune up for Battle

Up-and-coming musicians have just a few more weeks to sign up for a chance to throw down in the Sea to Sky Battle of the Bands.

Now in its fifth year, the annual talent competition helps young, aspiring musicians from the region gain performance experience and take their musical pursuits to the next level. Entrants may compete in the solo artist or band category. The competition is open to residents of any community between Horseshoe Bay and D'arcy. In the band category, there must be at least one member who is a resident of one of these communities and is under the age of 35.

Anyone interested in competing must complete the application package and submit a $25 entrance fee by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 9. For forms and more details on the competition, visit www.lunawhistler.com/battle.

The semifinals - a closed audition held in front of a panel of talent judges - will be held in Whistler on Sunday, April 25, with three finalists in each category moving on to the finals, which take place on Friday, April 30.

An artistic opportunity

The Whistler Arts Council has been recognizing artistic achievements of local students in the visual, literary, performing and media arts since 1987. Despite some big funding cuts to arts programming at provincial and federal levels WAC will continue to offer its Student Art Awards and Art Bursaries.

WAC is now accepting applications for the 2010 Student Art Awards and Bursary programs for elementary and secondary school students from Whistler, Pemberton and Mt. Currie.

The Whistler Arts Council Student Art Award is awarded to a graduating student from each school who has demonstrated artistic achievement in the visual, literary, performing or media arts. Awards of $500 are made to students graduating from Grade 12, while $100 awards are given to a graduating student from each of Myrtle Philip, Spring Creek, Signal Hill Elementary ...cole La Passerelle and l'...cole de la Vallée de Pemberton. The awards will be presented at each school's graduating ceremony in June.

Students interested in applying for the art awards are asked to submit at least three recent works that were not completed as part of a school project, along with a letter from a teacher stating that these works were created outside of the classroom. All students will present their work to a jury. Performance auditions will be held for students applying in the categories of dance, theatre or music. The deadline for application is Friday, May 7.

The Summer Art Bursary is awarded to a student in any grade from Myrtle Philip and Spring Creek Community Schools, Whistler Secondary School, Alta Lake School, Signal Hill Elementary School, Pemberton Secondary, ...cole la Passerelle, l'...cole de la Vallée de Pemberton and Xit'olacw Community School who plans to attend a summer art camp to further their studies in the visual, performing, literary or media arts. Bursaries of up to $250 are available towards tuition, accommodation and/or travel costs. The deadline for bursary applications is Friday, May 21.

Application forms for the awards and bursaries are available at each school. You can also request the information by e-mailing info@whistlerartscouncil.com .
