There's a saying the staff at the Whistler Chamber of Commerce like to use that could just as easily serve as the slogan for the organization's annual awards show: "We lift as we climb."

"The idea of the Whistler Excellence Awards and the reason why it's so important to nominate people is because, as a community having our own successes, we have to remember to bring people along with us in those successes," said chamber CEO Val Litwin.

Scheduled for June 9 at the Fairmont, the awards recognize those making positive contributions to the community in the areas of business, customer service, innovation, sustainability, the arts and community service. Nominations are now open until midnight on April 13.

With over 400 expected to attend the black-tie ceremony, Litwin said it's a prime opportunity to raise the profile of not only the winners, but also every nominee on the bill.

"It's credibility in the wider community and an opportunity to stand up and be recognized," he said. "I think when someone becomes a focal point in the community... you attract resources and support to you because you're now someone people have celebrated and they're invested in your success."

An independent selection committee pored through over 120 nominations last year, and will once again have its work cut out for it with hardware up for grabs in several different categories: Citizen of the Year, Business Person of the Year, Innovative Business of the Year, Rising Star of the Year, Whistler Experience Service for both small and large businesses, Sustainability in Action and the Whistler Champion of Arts & Culture.

Litwin said for anyone considering submitting, nomination applications should be robust, detailed and include references. For more details on the nomination criteria, visit www.whistlerchamber.com.

Registration to the event will open April 12.
