Five Peaks this Saturday

There’s still time to register for the Whistler stage of the B.C. 5 Peaks Trail Running Series, which takes place this Saturday, Aug. 23 on Whistler Mountain.

There’s still time to register for the Whistler stage of the B.C. 5 Peaks Trail Running Series, which takes place this Saturday, Aug. 23 on Whistler Mountain.

This week more than 460 people had already signed up to race, and registration is expected to top 600 runners on race day. Organizers have also gone with a chip timing system to break up the starts into different categories and prevent runners from bunching up on the singletrack sections of the trails.

There are two courses available, a 10.8 km Enduro course and a 5.6 km Sport course, both of which start outside the Roundhouse Lodge. The Enduro Course gets underway with a quick loop into Glacier Bowl before heading back up the Roundhouse and over to the Harmony Lake Trail, up Burnt Stew to Little Whistler Peak, and back down the access roads to the Harmony Meadows turnoff. There are two water stations, one at 2 km, and another at 8 km.

The Sport course also starts with a loop to Glacier Bowl, then makes a lap of Harmony Lake before heading back to the start. There is one water station at 2 km.

Pre-race registration is available at www.5peaks.com, or you can register at the race check-in on Aug. 22 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., or 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Salomon Store in the Pan Pacific Hotel. Participants can also pick up coupons for 50 per cent off sightseeing to bring their cheering sections along.

The gondola will begin uploading at 9 a.m. and the racing gets underway at 11 a.m., followed by an awards presentation outside the Roundhouse Lodge.

Junior golf championship seeking golfers

The inaugural Sea to Sky Junior Golf Championship is looking for participants for its first competition, with competitors playing 18 holes at each of three local courses to determine the overall winner by gross score.

The price is just $100 per junior, which includes the three rounds of golf, dinner after each round, and a chance to win prizes after the final round.

The first 18 holes are on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at Nicklaus North in Whistler, starting at 2 p.m. The second round is the following day at 1:30 p.m. at Pemberton Meadows, and the finally round is at Squamish Valley on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The sponsoring pro is Charlie Maxwell at Squamish Valley Golf Club.

Entry forms are available at participating courses, or can be sent by e-mail by contacting Adriane Polo at apolo@shaw.ca.
