Five youths from Surrey aged 17 and 18 were in Squamish Provincial Court on May 30 to be formally charged in connection with a May 28 incident on Main Street in Whistler where two youths were assaulted at knifepoint and a third was robbed.

One of the victims was stabbed in the abdomen and arm, and was rushed to Whistler Health Care Centre. From there he was transported by air ambulance to Lions Gate Hospital. He was eventually transferred to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster where he is listed in stable condition.

The second victim was struck in the head with a bottle, and narrowly missed being stabbed. Both victims were visitors from Ontario.

A third victim was robbed during the incident, which took place at approximately 11:25 p.m. on May 28 outside of a 24-hour convenience store.

According to Staff Sergeant Hilton Haider of the Whistler RCMP detachment, the robbery was not the object of the assault. "It appears as if this was a case of two groups coming together and things getting out of control."

Two of the suspects involved in the stabbing were taken into custody by 8 a.m. the next day. After executing two search warrants and interviewing more than 30 witnesses, three more suspects were arrested the following day.

"This is quite a serious incident with one victim in serious condition at the time, so we pulled out all the stops to get things finished as soon as possible," says Haider. "This is a lot of work with parents calling, talking with legal aid, Crown counsel, getting the Justice of the Peace here, and getting the suspects remanded into custody."

The RCMP recommended that all five be charged with assault, and assault with a deadly weapon. Haider is hoping that a charge of robbery will be laid as well.

The three 18 year olds charged were Imran Karim, Khalid Kahn, and Rajinder Grewal. The identities of the 17 year old suspects are protected under the Young Offender’s Act.

Suspects held in Squamish house party shooting

Four Squamish males were arrested and detained last week in connection with a May 6 incident at a Squamish house party where six people were hospitalized, one with multiple gunshot wounds. The other victims were beaten by what the Squamish RCMP referred to as "blunt instruments."

The incident occurred early in the morning on May 6 when four men entered the house and started attacking guests. The police received a 911 call reporting the shooting just before 5 a.m. and responded with officers and paramedics.

The arrests came after a two-week investigation by the RCMP, and the four suspects appeared in Squamish Provincial Court on May 24 to face a number of charges.

Dalbir Singh Ghuman is charged with breaking and entering, aggravated assault, six counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence.

Jason Jasbinder Haer is charged with breaking and entering, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence, and five counts of assault with a weapon.

Gurbinder Singh Toor is charged with breaking and entering, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence, six counts of assault with a weapon and two firearms related charges.

A fourth Squamish male was charged, but since he is 15 year old, his identity is protected by the Young Offenders Act. He is charged with breaking and entering, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence, and six counts of assault with a weapon.

The four suspects remain in custody, and the RCMP believe there may be more charges laid in the coming weeks.
