Former Ironman champion sets new Squamish Tri record

Whistler Tri Club, local runners grab nine podiums

Peter Reid, a three-time Ironman World Champion, has showed he can still do Olympic distance with the best of them, setting a new record for the Squamish Triathlon on Sunday in the 10 th year of the race.

The course included a 1,500 metre swim, a 37 km bike leg and a 10 km trail run, which Reid completed in a time of 1:56:39 — beating the previous record by one second.

Reid, who now lives in Brackendale, was fourth out of the water, first on the bike by 1:48, and sixth on the run.

Andrew Russell of Revelstoke, the 2006 winner, managed to make up close to two minutes on the run to keep things close and crossed the finish line in 1:57:30 — seven seconds ahead of Vancouver’s Paul Krochak.

All three runners won their respective age groups. Reid was first in 35 to 39, Russell first in 25 to 29 and Krochak first in 30 to 34.

The top female was Anne-Marie Madden of Vancouver, placing 11 th overall with a time of 2:13:22. Whistler’s Marie-Anne Prevost was second among women with a time of 2:16:13, also winning the women’s 30 to 34 age category. Third place went to Paige Gardiner of Vancouver in 2:17:45.

The top Whistler athlete once again was David Higgins, who placed eighth overall and second behind Peter Reid in the 35 to 39 group with a time of 2:10:59. Higgins was seventh on both the swim and bike legs, and 26 th on the bike.

Bob Deeks was 12 th overall and first in the men’s 45 to 49 race in 2:14:19, boosted by the eighth fastest cycling time of the day.

Greg Sandkuhl managed to finish 24 th overall and 19 th among all male participants, while placing first overall in the Men’s 60 to 64 race in 2:19:11 — more than 10 minutes faster than the next male in his category.

Joe Hertz was 29 th overall and just missed the top-three in the men’s 30 to 34 category, where he placed fourth in 2:20:43.

Claire Daniels won the women’s 20 to 24 race in 2:29:59, placing 50 th overall and fifth among women. Racing triathlons since she was in high school, she finished with a gap of close to 14 minutes over the next competitor in her age group.

Alisa Brownlee finished 56 th overall and was first in the women’s 40 to 44 race with a time of 2:32:59. She had a comfortable gap of more than two minutes over the next competitor in her age group.

Liz Cullen was 62 nd overall and fifth in the women’s 25 to 29 race in 2:33:57.

Ryan Black was fifth in the men’s 20 to 24 race in 2:34:38.

Julie Mountifield was sixth in the women’s 25 to 29 race in 2:34:40.

Guy Patterson was 12 th in men’s 30 to 34 in 2:35:51.

Catherine O’Neill was seventh in women’s 25 to 29 in 2:37:10.

Woochan Jeong was 17 th in men’s 35 to 39 in 2:37:32.

Trent Argent was 15 th in men’s 30 to 34 in 2:38:48.

Patrick Gosselin was 16 th in men’s 30 to 34 in 2:39:04.

Megan Wastle was fourth in women’s 30 to 34 in 2:40:11.

Brenda Baker was second in women’s 50 to 54 in 2:48:00, making up for a slow swim and average bike with the 42 nd fastest run time.

Jennifer Leigh was sixth in women’s 40 to 44 in 2:48:47.

Francesca Cole was third in women’s 45 to 49 in 2:53:38.

Tracey Menchions finished in 2:54:42, in an unspecified age category.

From Pemberton, Nancy Johnston was second in the women’s 40 to 44 group in 2:35:13.

Carly Grace was 24 th in women’s 25 to 29 in 3:33:50.

In the relay category, The Incredibles from Garibaldi Highlands were the fastest team with a total time of 2:12:14, followed by Brian Hughes Law Offices in 2:19:09, and Team Carneys in 2:20:05.

The 99ers were the top Whistler team in fourth place with a time of 2:21:09. They also placed third in the mixed category.

All About Me, Me, Me finished fifth overall and first in the women’s relay category in 2:23:08.

The Burke Sisters were fourth in the women’s category in 2:37:43.

Do We Have To were fifth in the women’s category in 2:40:16.

Cal Tri were 10 th in the mixed category in 2:41:26.

The Glacier Girls were 12 th in the women’s category in 2:49:27.

Team 2-1-2 were 13 th in the same category in 2:50:41.

Epic Riders were 16 th in mixed in 2:50:44.

There were 52 teams of three taking part this year as well as 262 individuals.
