French skiers dominate freeskiing tour

The second of three events on the International Free Skiers Association world tour wrapped up last Friday at Snowbird, Utah with more than 60 cm of fresh powder and a bluebird day.

The second of three events on the International Free Skiers Association world tour wrapped up last Friday at Snowbird, Utah with more than 60 cm of fresh powder and a bluebird day.

In the men’s competition, the title went to Romain Maitre of France who skied a line so smooth and fast, and with such big air that he also won the Sick Bird award. Manuel Gaidet of France, the winner of the Canadian Freeskiing Championships in Whistler in January, took second place with another incredible line. Third place went to a local skier, Ben Wheeler, who was new to the tour.

The top Canadian was Ian McIntosh of Panorama, who finished in fifth place, following up his second place finish in Whistler.

A pair of Whistler skiers also placed top-10, with Dana Flahr in sixth and Leif Zapf-Gilje in seventh. Jonny Law of Whistler and Squamish was 13 th .

In the women’s competition, it was an all-American finish with Jessica Baker and Kit DesLauriers of Jackson Hole, Wyoming taking the top two spots. Whistler winner Ingrid Backstrom of Squaw Valley was third, holding onto her lead in the standings.

Fernie’s Meg Oster was the top Canadian in ninth.

The IFSA world tour wraps up with the North Face Freeride at Les Arcs, France March 1-5.
