Challenge your team A few team openings are still available for the 1997 Felix Belczyk RMCC Ski Challenge, Tues., April 8, on Blackcomb Mountain. Beneficiaries of this fun day of skiing are kids. Skiers on the four-member teams join World Cup and Olympic champions Felix Belczyk, Todd Brooker, Lucie LaRoche and Karen Percy Lowe to generate funds for local children’s charities and for Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities of Canada. The eighth annual Blackcomb event is expected to raise about $100,000 for RMCC, which provides support for community organizations that help improve the quality of life for children and families of children with life-threatening or chronic illness or special needs. "With a few weeks to go, we expect another significant success," reports Ron Knight, McDonald’s assistant vice-president, whose office helps to co-ordinate the Belczyk ski challenge. This event is one of four RMCC Ski Challenges held annually. The others are hosted by Todd Brooker, a former World Cup downhill champion, in Ontario; World Cup silver medalist Lucie LaRoche in Quebec; and Olympic medalist Karen Percy hosts in Alberta. Since 1986, the ski challenges have raised more than $3 million. The teams compete in a giant slalom race as well as a GT race and enjoy breakfast, lunch and an awards dinner where the top team in five flights, as well as top male and female competitors, are recognized.
