Get Deep into Summer

Deep Summer Photo Challenge this Wednesday at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler

Deep Summer is back! It's the extreme sport photography competition that sold out so fast last year it caused the organizer's head to explode.

Fabrications aside, this year's six photographers have three days to shoot and edit their slide show, which will be presented next Wednesday at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. Let's meet the photographers, shall we?

Marcus Riga: Born in Estonia  and raised in Toronto, he fled West before graduating from the Ryerson University journalism program. He's known for his raw, photojournalistic approach that threads dramatic images into a narrative flow, connecting audience to the subject.

Tim Zimmerman: A fervent mountain biker and a pro photographer, he never considered combining his two loves until attending his first Deep Summer exhibition. Now, well, as we said, the Oregon native is a masochist, so expect some dramatic visuals that will look like they took great pains to capture.

Robin O'Neil: She's a photographer, an adventurer and athlete who's evidently quite fascinated with the dynamic mountain range in which she resides. Her photos capture the biker's impact and relationship with nature as much as the drama of the ride itself.

Dan Barham: He's an Englishman who wised up, packed up and settled on the North Shore. His sharp, crisp images of enviable backcountry excursions have earned him a job as one of Bike Magazine's few senior photographers.

Justin Olsen: Born and bred in the Rockies, this first-time Deep Summer participant tries to capture those remote landscapes that seem impossible to get to. He's spent the last six years getting to those places. And, like everyone else in this competition, he's a top-notch documentary maker.

John Wellburn: Meet the wild card. Wellburn is a William's Lake based photographer picked by Pinkbike.com as the Wildcard Photographer after his online photo submission earned the highest ranking over 11,000 online votes. That's a lot of votes, Wellburn. Good luck to you. You're in the big leagues now.
