Get into CrankWorx

Still spots for racers, volunteers

The four-day CrankWorx Freeride Mountain Bike Festival, which kicked off yesterday with the third annual Air Downhill down A-Line, has a little something for everybody this weekend, as well as opportunities to get involved in the action.

Racers can still sign up for the Nissan Boneyard Biker Cross on Friday, The Garbanzo Downhill on Saturday and the B.C. Downhill Championships on Sunday. The registration area is located in the Telus Conference Centre, in the Garibaldi Room.

The cost is $60 per event, and a race package and $5 gets you a park pass. There is more than $30,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs, as well as Siemens Mobile phones for all first place winners.

Spectators are welcome at all the events. The Biker-X runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and the Siemens Mobile Slopestyle, an invitational only event at the base of Whistler Mountain, runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

If you don’t want to compete but still like to get close to the action, then CrankWorx is still looking for a few good volunteers. Volunteers will get schwag bags as well as the chance to win Whistler Mountain Bike Park passes, Meadow Park passes, and other prizes. Drop by the conference centre’s Black Tusk Room to sign-on.

The latest event to be added to the list this year is the Little Ripper Kids Race on Saturday, located at the SuperPages tent in Village Square. Open to kids from 4 to 12, a fun course will be set up in the village for young riders to enjoy. Entry into the race is a $5 donation to WORCA, and all participants will get a souvenir bike plate.

Crankworx has also created a Cruiser Bike Parade on Sunday for all those chopped, modified or classic cruiser bikes out there. Bring your bike to the SuperPages tent before 2 p.m. and take a legal ride through the village – for 30 minutes the bylaw will be lifted for participants. Judges will reward the top bikes with some prizes from the Garbanzo Bike and Bean.

Mountain bike enthusiasts will also want to stop by the base of the mountain to watch the Baia Brothers clear obstacles on their trials bikes, Dangerous Dan and the Flowshow riding ridiculous North Shore-style stunts, and see the latest bikes and accessories from the leading manufacturers. You can also meet the pros in the "Tech Area" set up in Day Skier Lot 1, where all the manufacturers and racing teams will be represented.

Last but not least the CrankWorx Mainstage will be providing visitors with free concerts throughout the festival with Los Furious on Friday, the Yoko Casinos with Curtis Satiago on Saturday afternoon and Billy and the Lost Boys on Saturday night.
