Game report by Richard Middleton

The Amsterdam Pub came into Monday’s Whistler Summer Soccer League game with a chance to consolidate their spot at the top of the standings. Their opponents, the United GLC – nicknamed the "nolongerhorns," after their former sponsor – were still smarting from their loss to Maxx Fish the week before and were determined to keep their spot in the rankings.

From the kickoff you could tell that The Dam was going to have a rough night with their top defenders, "Golden Mullet" and Harvey Lynn, missing from the lineup.

It took five minutes for the United GLC to turn this to their advantage. Left winger Taka kicked a through ball to yours truly who attempted a shot on net. It was deflected by the charging goal keeper, but the defence couldn’t clear it and Honeyball from the GLC put it in the net from three yards out.

The United GLC continued to dominate play at both ends of the field and extended their lead to 2-0 when Pete Beeswanger headed in a well-placed corner kick.

The Dam got into the game after that, with the help of striker Hughes. Unfortunately he couldn’t find much support near the goal, and the GLC goalkeeper had a relatively quiet afternoon. The teams settled down and played a more defensive game for the remainder of the first half.

The GLC had déjà vu heading into the second half, having squandered an identical half-time lead the week before. The Amsterdam tried to get back in the game early on, led by Ken Forde and Walker, but the GLC defenders stayed with them and they had trouble making shots on net.

Persistence paid off, however, and at the 20 minute mark Forde put the Amsterdam on the board. He ran the ball into the right corner and laid it back to Davidson. Davidson popped the ball up for Hughes, who beautifully back-headed it into the goal.

The United GLC then tightened up their defence and gave the Amsterdam players little breathing space to build on their momentum.

At the 89 minute mark, yours truly picked up a loose ball at the half and took it to the net. With support on both sides, I rolled a soft pass to Pete Beeswanger who lobbed it over the keeper for his second goal of the night.

When the whistle ended the game, it was clear that the chase for the title is far from over – three teams are well within contention for the top spot in the rankings.

Final result, United GLC 3 The Amsterdam Pub 1.
