For the second year in a row, Canadian mountain bike star and defending world champion Roland Green will be racing in the Cheakamus Challenge Fall Classic Mountain Bike Race.

For the second year in a row, Canadian mountain bike star and defending world champion Roland Green will be racing in the Cheakamus Challenge Fall Classic Mountain Bike Race.

The 28-year-old from Victoria successfully defended his world championship title three weeks ago in Austria, and should be a shoe-in to defend his Cheakamus Challenge title as well. Green has wins in 1997, 1998, and 1999. He missed 2000 to compete in the world championships in Australia. His teammate and training partner Ryder Hesjedal took the top spot that year. He was back in front of the pack in 2001 to win his fourth title.

Other top Canadian riders for the Sept. 21 event were still being confirmed at press time.

In the women’s race, three-time world champion and Canadian legend Alison Sydor has won every Cheakamus Challenge she has entered, including the 2001 event, and three previous events in the mid 1990s. If she commits, she could be a shoe-in for a fifth title.

In fact, organizer Grant Lamont has extended invitations to all past Cheakamus Challenge champions to celebrate the 20 th year of the event, which was originally billed as "See Colours And Puke."

Registration for this year’s race is ahead of last year, and this year competitors will be able to register on race day from the start line at thte Squamish Airport in Brackendale.

The 71-kilometre race gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday, so be there early to register.

Following this year’s race, the apres party will be held at The Brew House in the north village.

Awards for the race take place at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., the Cheaky Awards will be presented to locals who have made contributions to the local mountain bike scene. The volunteer party starts at 8 p.m.
