The Pemberton Grizzlies continue to be busy with their fall football season — this weekend they revisit their Sea to Sky rivalry with Squamish.
The Grizzlies will travel to face the Howe Sound Secondary Sounders on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. for the second meeting between the two clubs this season. Pemberton defeated the Sounders 20-14 in its first-ever home game back in August.
Head coach John Burleson is expecting another exciting game between his 2-1 Grizzlies and the 3-4 Sounders.
"It's always a good match-up, it doesn't matter what the records are," he said. "Our practices this week have really picked up and (the players) are really looking forward to the opportunity to play their regional rivals twice in one season.
"We really encourage everyone in Whistler, Pemberton and Mount Currie to make the... trip down, support the Grizzlies and support football in the Sea to Sky corridor."
The Grizzlies will be on the field for back-to-back games on the weekend, as they'll also face the North Delta Longhorns on the road Sunday, Oct. 20. Since the Longhorns are a member of the B.C. Community Football Association, the game will be played with Canadian rules instead of the American regulations used in B.C. high school games.
Also coming up on Pemberton's schedule is an Oct. 27 meeting with the Correlieu Secondary School Clan in Quesnel and another road match-up against the Burnaby Central Wildcats on the first weekend of November (date TBA).
The Grizzlies have decided they won't travel to Mexico for an international tournament in December as originally planned, but they will be making a visit to Washington State University in late November. While there, players will receive athletic and academic tours of the campus and meet with the WSU Cougars before they take on the Utah Utes.
To help them make the trip, the Grizzlies will be fundraising with another round of Krispy Kreme doughnut sales, and proceeds from sales at Mount Currie Coffee Co. on Oct. 24. The team will also be selling PowAir odour neutralizers on an ongoing basis to help raise money for the trip and other team costs.
Saints hit first snag
The Whistler Saints flag football team had its undefeated run come to and end at the hands of the North Vancouver Raiders in a 16-0 loss suffered on Thanksgiving Monday, Oct. 14.
Although Whistler had some standout offensive play from rookies Josh Wheeler and Tyler Dye in the loss, the Saints were held off the scoreboard for the only time this season. The team now sits at 5-1 in North Shore Football League play.
The Saints return to action on Sunday, Oct. 20 against the 49ers at Squamish Elementary School.
