Gymnasts solid at invitational

Heading into competitions, the Whistler Gymnastics Club is always apprehensive – without a full-time gym to train in, they never know how they are going to stack up against other clubs with superior facilities.

Heading into competitions, the Whistler Gymnastics Club is always apprehensive – without a full-time gym to train in, they never know how they are going to stack up against other clubs with superior facilities.

As always they were pleasantly surprised last weekend as the provincial competitive gymnasts travelled to Surrey for the annual Carol Lenz Invitational meet. They were on the road by 5 a.m. to be there in time for the warmup at the new Guildford Community Centre at 8.

Despite the butterflies in the car ride and the tiredness, the girls perked up to stay even with the competition against some of B.C.’s top clubs, and kids from as far away as Alberta and The Yukon Territory.

Compliments were given to coaches on how good the team is looking this season. Although the girls did their personal best routines, only a few came away with awards.

One of those girls was Nicola Bennett who finished first all around in the Level 2 Open category. Several other girls earned medals in individual events, and finished in the top five overall for their competitive categories. Unfortunately the complete results for the Whistler girls were not available at press time, but will be posted next week.

This weekend the Kids In Progress (KIPs) will be competing on the bars and the floor in Vancouver.

Sign-up has already started for the eight-week spring session with the club. The spring session includes classes for four-and-a-half to 12-year-olds, teen high school classes, sport aerobics for adults, and Friday night drop-in.
