New wheels are on order for some students in the Sea to Sky school district. Three buses, each with a capacity of 80 passengers, were recently ordered for the district along with a 59-passenger bus at a total cost of $527,367.

The new wheels are scheduled to arrive in the spring.

The buses were bought through a joint procurement program that saves school districts up to 15 per cent of the cost of new buses.

"These four new buses will allow our district to save money on maintenance costs that can be reinvested back into the classroom," said MLA Jordan Sturdy. "More importantly, this investment ensures our students are transported to-and-from school in safe, comfortable and reliable vehicles."

Rick Hume, the school district's director of facilities and services, said the new buses would replace aging buses in the School District 48 fleet.

He said the three large buses would be used in Pemberton and Whistler. The fourth smaller bus is scheduled for use in Squamish. Hume expects the new buses to go into service in September.
