Highway rerouted for propane leak

Crews that were servicing the propane line outside the South Side Lodge accidentally ruptured the pipeline with an excavator Tuesday, prompting emergency crews to reroute highway traffic until the line could be capped.

Crews that were servicing the propane line outside the South Side Lodge accidentally ruptured the pipeline with an excavator Tuesday, prompting emergency crews to reroute highway traffic until the line could be capped.

The leak was small, but Whistler Fire Rescue Services took the precaution of rerouting highway traffic up Lake Placid Road for about 20 minutes until a crew from Terasen could repair the leak. They maintained a corridor around the excavator after the highway reopened.

Two fire trucks and members of the RCMP attended the scene, and the Husky gas station shut down its pumps temporarily. Some water was sprayed into the hole to dissipate the small amount of liquid propane that had pooled on the road, and to make the area safe for work crews. Nobody was injured in the incident.
