Environment receives first direct HIT Aug. 4 The newly-formed Habitat Improvement Team will be working with the Whistler Fish Stewardship Group cleaning fish-bearing streams on the evening of Aug. 4. The Habitat Improvement Team is a new community-based, action-oriented environmental team dedicated to improving wildlife habitat in Whistler. Co-ordinated by the Mountain Planning & Environmental Resources team at Whistler/Blackcomb, HIT will bring together volunteers and local stakeholder groups for evening work sessions. Volunteers taking part in the first evening will meet at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4 at the base of the Wizard chair on Blackcomb. Organizers ask that volunteers call ahead of time (938-7220) so they know how many people are coming and can co-ordinate resources. Six evening sessions are planned, running every second Tuesday to Oct. 13. Each evening will be dedicated to a different environmental initiative, as directed by a local environmental group. The evening sessions will be limited to three hours and include refreshments following the work, as well as a brief discussion about environmental stewardship and how the evening’s work will be done. Some of the main goals of the HIT program are to integrate the various environmental groups and individuals in Whistler and to foster a sense of pride and ownership in the environment.
