Huge numbers expected for 24 Hours of Adrenaline

World Solo Championships to be biggest ever

Organizers are expecting as many as 250 solo riders and a hundred teams to take part in the second annual 24 Hours of Adrenaline mountain bike races held in Whistler. The inaugural Whistler event last year attracted more than 500 riders, and this year is expected to be a lot bigger.

So far the course is expected to be the same as last year, following Lost Lake trails and trails around Blackcomb Mountain. Base II will once again be the start and finish area, as well as the rider support and camping area for teams.

The teams will compete on a 12.1 km course, while the solo racers will have an additional 2.1 km section. In the team category, there are categories for teams of four, five person coed, five person female, five person open age, and corporate teams, which can have up to 10 riders

The race will take place over 24 hours, starting at noon on Sept. 4 with a running start to the bikes, and ending at noon on Sept. 5.

The top solo competitor last year, Chris Eathough of Maryland, made 22 laps of the 14.2 km course in just under 24 hours for a total off 312.4 km. The top woman was Christina Begy of Colorado, who completed 18 laps of the course.

Marty Bulock of Calgary and Sheri Foster of Edmonton, the 2004 national solo champions, are expected to take part, as well as the top solo riders from the U.S. and Europe.

The top team in last year’s race was NRG’s Surly Singlespeeders from Nelson, who completed 30 laps of the course in 24:35:39.

Conditions were hot and dry for last year’s race, but once the field spread out after a few laps dust wasn’t an issue for the riders.

Like last year, Snow Covers Sports will be the local bike shop supporting the race, taking registrations and renting light systems for the night. Store manager Alex Cogger, who completed his first 24 Hours of Adrenaline race last year as a solo, plans to race again this year.

"I’m doing it and a few other people from the shop are doing it, so we should have lots of support out there. It’s a good race. Last year some of the riders said it was the best course of any 24 Hours race," he said.
