ESPN, CNN, Australia's Channel 7, CBC, and the Associated Press are just some of the media outlets hoping to set up shop inside Whistler's Media House during the Winter Olympics.
On Wednesday, Sept. 30, the deadline for accreditation, Casey Vanden Heuvel from Tourism Whistler announced that hundreds of news outlets from over 20 countries had signed up for the space inside MY Millennium Place in February.
The individuals and organizations signing up are from "unaccredited media," which means they don't have accreditation to cover or broadcast the actual Olympic events.
"The quantity of requests that have come in reflect the fact that we have gone out with an informative campaign to media to let them know we have our program in place," said Vanden Heuvel.
Despite the high numbers, Vanden Heuvel said Tourism Whistler will focus on specific clients rather than letting in anyone who wants to use the media resource.
"We are spending more time focusing on CBC and CNN, rather than trying to let in anyone and everyone who knows we exist, because we know their audiences are key audiences that we want to reach with our Whistler message," he said.
Some of the key places Tourism Whistler is targeting include Canada, U.S., UK, Germany, Australia and parts of Asia. Vanden Heuvel said he hopes these countries will cover Whistler as a destination spot as well as the Olympic Games.
In total, Tourism Whistler expects to see up to 1,000 media representatives use the Whistler Media House between Feb. 1 and 28.
