What: International Imaging Conference May 1-7

Where: Fairmont Chateau Whistler

Image is everything, at least it is to a truly international roster of photographers, technicians and software gurus attending the International Imaging Conference in Whistler May 1-7.

Open to professional and amateur photo/imaging enthusiasts, the conference includes a trade show, seminars, social events and workshops with internationally known photographers.

Dave Buzzard, a local member of the Professional Photographers Association of B.C., says much of the conference will focus on cutting edge technology in the digital photography world, including software.

Many of the guest speakers at the conference make their living shooting portraits. Buzzard, who was a news photographer for daily papers in South Africa at the time apartheid was coming to an end, said he expected portrait photography to be easy compared to shooting news. But there’s a lot more to it than most people see.

"This (conference) would be a good thing for a lot of young photographers," Buzzard said. "You can use the skill sets in all kinds of ways. They apply equally to shooting portraits of championship snowboarders."

Workshop topics include Digital Trends and Futures by Sir John Henshall, who is an independent photo imaging lecturer and journalistic sleuth of the industry. Neil Warner, a five-time Irish photographer of the year who has clients both in Europe and North America, will talk about his on going successes and how he re-invents himself to his market. Australia’s Malcolm Matheison will discuss his haunting images, their creative impact and subsequent benefit for his non-profit efforts for children around the world. Luc Peeters of Belgium uses his journalistic style to share his philosophy of time and place during wedding assignments, breaking away from the North American over posed style. Vicki Sander is a non-nonsense photographic rep from New York City who will expose what a great portfolio can and should do.

The program also includes a business series: sales and marketing, branding and networking skills which are applicable to all business types.

More than 300 conference participants are expected. For further details and registration for the conference visit the Professional Photographers Association of B.C. Web site: www.ppabc.com

Registration is open for the full schedule as well as for day passes and individual workshops.
