Every year at events like the World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s 72-Hour Filmmaker Showdown and Heavy Hitting Films’ B-Grade Horrorfest we get to see the tip of the iceberg that is independent filmmaking in Whistler.
For every five-minute film there are 500 more. A sea of footage flows through the Whistler underground. Experimental, artistic, quirky and cool, it’s out there. Public venues for it, however, are few and far between.
An event this Tuesday evening at the HUB in Creekside is trying to change that.
Whistler filmmaker and video artist Davin Peterson is organizing an evening of screenings for locally-produced short films. Several local crews, including Golden Boy Productions, the Cable 6 crew and Peterson’s Base Technology, will be screening their work.
Peterson is extending the screening invitation to anyone who attends the event. All submitted films must be locally and independently produced, in DVD format, and under five minutes long.
The event is not a contest, rather an initiative to bring the independent film community together. There is no admission but donations will be accepted toward creation of an organized independent film group in Whistler.
"There is lots of great talent in this town," said Peterson. "We’re trying to open it up."
The event kicks off at 9 p.m. with the films starting at 10 p.m.
