MirrorrorriM: The Alchemy of Play, a large interactive sculptural project now taking shape in the Callaghan Valley, is looking for funds to help its construction and debut at Burning Man 2016.

Co-organizer Lola Polnik says the Whistler artists working on the giant, transportable kaleidoscope hope to raise $30,000 by Aug. 20.

The money will cover the cost of materials and a special transportation trailer.

The kaleidoscope is the length of a bus and will use mirrors to project people walking inside the sculpture as patterns and shapes.

It will also have a special roll-chamber and participant-controlled lasers.

Whistler Writers AGM

The Whistler Writing Society is holding its annual AGM on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at 9327 Emerald Drive.

The agenda will update the year's activities, financials and the 2016 Whistler Writers Festival.

Cultural Connector taking shape

The Audain Art Museum is now connected with the Whistler Skatepark in a new Valley Trail section of the Cultural Connector. Work was completed on June 30.

It is just one part of the connector's development, which is expected to be completed by fall 2017.

A new forest walkway south of the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) is currently in the planning stages, plans for public art in the Upper Village by Chateau Boulevard is being planned, and the relocation of the SLCC information kiosk is awaiting building permit approval. The wayfinding signage and branding is at the procurement stage.

"The Cultural Connector experience adds to Whistler's fast-growing arts, culture and heritage scene. It complements other recent additions like the Audain Art Museum and Susan Point public art piece, and builds on the various cultural initiatives, events and galleries that have been established in our community over the years," said Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden in a release.

Alpine theatre now open

The Samsung Alpine Theatre, located downstairs at the new Rendezvous Lodge on Blackcomb Mountain, has opened.

The theatre is a centre of learning and entry to its program is included with the Peak 2 Peak 360 sightseeing ticket and passes.

The theatre offers daily video viewings of the story of the history and evolution of the alpine ecosystem, as well as the short 50 Years of Going Beyond, a film that celebrates Whistler on its golden anniversary.

There will also be educational talks on select days.
