Input sought on cycling plans

Transportation, recreation plans presented at tonight’s open house

By Andrew Mitchell

From residents who use the valley trail and highway to commute to work; to mountain bikers who use the trails for recreation; to tourism businesses that see future growth in the sport, the Whistler Cycling Committee wants to hear from everyone who has an interest in the future of cycling in Whistler.

Tonight (Thursday, Oct. 5), the committee will present three cycling plans to the community at an open house at Spruce Grove Field House, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The first is the Transportation Cycling Plan, which looks at how bicycle commuters get around Whistler and the facilities that are available at destinations around town.

The second is the Recreational Cycling Plan, which looks at trails, cycling tourism and economic development, as well as services provided to cyclists and the needs of the local cycling community.

The third plan is the Cycling Trails Master Plan, which is part of the Recreational Cycling Plan. This plan evaluates Whistler’s stock of singletrack and doubletrack cycling trails, options for further trail development for all levels of cyclists, and standards for trail construction and maintenance.

The Whistler Cycling Committee was struck in 2000 by municipal council to guide the future development of cycling in the community. The committee includes representatives from the RMOW, as well as stakeholders like WORCA and Tourism Whistler, and representatives from bike shops and cycling tourism.

People are invited to provide their feedback on all three plans at the open house or online. The final plans will be considered by the municipality and may be incorporated into the Whistler 2020 plan.
