Ironman Canada has fine-tuned their travel schedule in order to give travellers and residents in the Whistler and Pemberton regions up-to-the-minute highway closure information for the race on August 25.
When it comes to the main artery closures, southbound from Whistler between Alpine Way and the Callaghan Valley Road drivers will be unable to use Highway 99 from 8 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Travelling south from Whistler, drivers are able to leave the resort prior to 7:30 a.m. and after 12:30 p.m.
Northbound from Callaghan Valley Road into Whistler, ending at Alpine Way, restrictions run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Drivers can access Whistler throughout the event, but delays are expected in this stretch of the highway between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 a.m.
Going north between Alpine Way, Whistler, and Portage Road in Pemberton, Highway 99 is closed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Access to this route is best done before 9 a.m. and after 1 p.m. The same route southbound is difficult from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though the highway will be open. Drivers will experience detours and delays, unless they travel between 8 a.m. or after 5:30 p.m.
In Whistler:
Blackcomb Way West from Village Gate Boulevard to Lorimer Road is closed from Aug. 23 to 26, both north and southbound.
Alta Lake Road from Nita Lake Drive to Buckhorn Drive is closed on Aug. 24 from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and on race day, Aug. 25, it is closed from 4 a.m. until 10 a.m.
In Pemberton:
Pemberton Meadows Road is closed northbound from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and southbound, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 25.
Ironman Canada spokesperson Maureen Douglas recommended that anyone needing emergency help on Aug. 25 in the Pemberton Meadows Road area to call 911 for easier access.
