Jail and Bail takes in $11,800

Participants exceed fundraising goal of $4,000

Eleven very-game people spent time in jail at Sunday's Farmer's Market during a "Jail 'n Bail" fundraiser hosted by local Cops for Cancer riders. The goal was to raise $4,000, and the participants almost tripled that with Dr. James McKenzie of Whistler Dental leading the way with $2,245 in contributions. Craig Beattie of Canadian Snowmobile Adventures raised a solid $1,530 and Rose Schimpf of Boston Pizza bribed her way to $1,415 in donations. Other participants included Mayor Ken Melamed, Councillors Tom Thomson and Chris Quinlan, Heidi Rode (jailed as a birthday present), Andrew Mesquitta, Sergeant Mike Leo of the Stl'atl'imx Tribal Police, John Holton of Merlin's and Randy Smith of Podium Auto.

The Cops for Cancer ride takes place on Sept. 21 to 29, with a group of police officers and others riding around the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast and Sea to Sky raising donations for the Canadian Cancer Society and pediatric cancer. The ride will stop in Whistler on Sept. 24 for another fundraiser.

Locals taking part this year include Constable Katherine Reid of the Whistler RCMP and paramedic Jeff Krauss, who assists with the RCMP auxiliary. For more, visit www.cancer.ca/copsforcancerbc.
