Who: Andrea Koziol

Where: MY Place

When: Tuesday, July 15

She’s folksy like Joni Mitchell. Jazzy like Holly Cole. Smooth like Sarah McLachlan. And strong like Alanis Morisette.

So it’s easy to see why Andrea Koziol is fast joining the ranks as one of Canada’s top women in music. Already a festival darling, thanks to an engaging repertoire of personal anecdotes, songs and stories, Koziol is well known for getting the crowd out of their seats during any one of her extraordinary performances.

Koziol considers herself a "torch folk" singer, thanks to a diverse musical background.

"I started out in jazz so the torch singer style came very naturally to me. Then I started writing folk songs that allow you to tell all the stories of life. Incorporating the two styles allows me to be a little bit of everything – part R&B, part folk, part soul and part jazz," she said.

Proudly playing acoustic from the heart, Koziol writes smart and engaging songs, singing them with passion and physical gusto that belies her small frame. While her personal stories might seem to some as soul-baring, to her it’s just bonding.

"Somebody will always come up to me after a show and talk about their interpretation of a particular song. So even though I am getting personal, everybody else brings their own experiences to frame it and I like that," she said.

Koziol comes to Whistler armed with a whole new batch of songs, ready to be released on her fourth album, Mysterious , in stores later this summer. She’ll also play favourites off her three previous albums.

Andrea has appeared all over Canada, from the Yukon to Newfoundland, and is on regular rotation on the CBC. She’s well known for regular guest appearances on Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Café .

This three-week B.C. tour is just a quickie for Koziol, mainly because she’s taking her one-year-old son on the road for the first time.

"We didn’t think we should be away from Toronto too long but with that said, he’s absolutely loving meeting all these people and goes nuts with the atmosphere at festivals, so we may have to keep going to keep him happy," she laughed.

Koziol will be playing the Vancouver Folk Festival over the July 18-20 weekend, but where else to better truly acquaint yourself with a true Canadian gem, but at MY Place, where the venue is intimate, the weather entirely predictable, and the acoustics amazing.

Tuned women’s Trish Jamieson opens for Koziol

This girl can do it all. She plants trees in the summer, teaches snowmobiling in the winter and skis, bikes and fishes in between.

How Trish Jamieson then finds the time then to pen catchy, original and soulful folk tunes is anybody’s guess but since moving to Pemberton from Kapuskasing three years ago, she’s caused quite a commotion in our local music community.

Jamieson was one of the seven "Tuned Women" who shared their songs and songwriting at MY Place a few months ago which is currently airing on Channel 6. She also made the finals in this year’s Whistler Music Search.

Tuned Women co-creator, Gillie Easdon said the jury was blown away with Jamieson’s performance. "Jamieson’s raspy voice coupled with searing emotional content and an engaging ease on the guitar has audiences transfixed. Trish is very natural on stage. Her songs are filled with a disarming sincerity and desperation that only leaves the listener hungry for another song," Easdon said.

Jamieson’s songs and stories can happen to us all. From loving and leaving, to living and dying, to winning and losing, and even hitchhiking, there’s something for everyone in her sets.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $13 for seniors and children. Sea to Sky Corridor 8 to 18 year olds pay just $2 for advance tickets when they purchase them in person at the box office. Phone MY Place at 604-935-8410.
