One of the largest bridges on the drive between Whistler and Vancouver is getting a tune up.
A construction speed zone will be in place through to December on the Nelson Creek Bridge just east of Horseshoe Bay as crews replace the bridge deck surface and upgrade the bridge to better handle an earthquake.
The budget for the work is $6.2 million. The contract to do the job was awarded to Kingston Construction.
During construction the speed limit on the five-lane bridge will be 60km/h and while two-lane traffic is expected to be maintained through the work period there will be times when traffic will be squeezed into one lane in each direction.
The goal of the work is to extend the lifespan of the bridge and enhance driver safety.
"Nelson Creek Bridge is vital to our region's economy, connecting business, tourists and residents with the Lower Mainland," said Jordan Sturdy, West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. "These are welcome upgrades."
The curved bridge is 223 metres long and is located two kilometers from Horseshoe Bay. It was built in 1973.
