Mikael Kingsbury kept his podium streak alive at 17, this time winning the men's individual mogul event at Lake Placid on Jan. 17. Fittingly, he won his first World Cup gold medal at this venue last season, and hasn't relinquished the men's leader's bib since then.
"I like to go last because I can see everybody before me and I know what I have to do," said Kingsbury, who made the super finals in first place and skied last. I like being in the role of being the guy to beat, and today I was there. Because I was watching and there were some pretty high scores, I know I had to do a pretty good run and I think I did it perfect with no mistakes.
"It shows I'm working in the right direction. For sure there are still a lot of things to improve, but for today I managed well mentally."
Americans Parick Deneen and Dylan Walczyk took the silver and bronze medals.
The event was the first of five Olympic qualifiers, and a win secured at least one spot for Canada in the Olympics.
Kingsbury was joined in the finals by Olympic champion Alex Bilodeau, as well as four other Canadians, but none of the other athletes made the podium. Bilodeau finished his day in fifth place after a fall in his superfinal run. Marc-Antoine Gagnon was seventh (just outside the top six superfinal), Cedric Rochon was 13th and Phil Marquis was a DNF. Eddie Hicks, who skis out of Whistler, is still on the injured list and did not compete.
On the women's side it was an off day for the Canadian team. Hannah Kearney of the U.S. came on strong after an injury forced her to miss the first two events of the season to ace the win. She was followed by Nicola Sudova of Czech Republic and Britney Cox of Australia. Chloe Dufour-Lapointe finished just off the podium in fourth place, while Justine Dufour-Lapointe placed sixth.
"My run was going well when I got a bit backseat in the middle section, so I stopped to get back into control," said Chloe. "It's part of the game, and it was a good warm-up for our home event next week in Calgary."
