Le May Doan beats Kane, Turgeon in voting

Olympic speedskating champion Catriona Le May Doan topped the polls as the Canadian Press’ Female Athlete of the Year.

Melanie Turgeon, star of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team and a four-time World Cup medalist last season, was among the finalists for the award. Other nominees for what is also known as the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award included golfer Lori Kane, the 2001 and 1997 winner.

Le May Doan, who is expected to be Canada’s flag-bearer at next month’s Salt Lake City Olympics, established lowered her own world record in the 500 metres last month and is the current world sprint champion and world single distance champion over 500 metres.

Le May Doan, who also won the award in 1998, received 52 first place votes and 217 total points. Kane was second with 25 first place votes and 161 points. Turgeon was third with seven first place votes and 65 points.
