Looking for a productive activity for the hot summer months? Late and Unique Nighttime Alternatives (LUNA) is again hosting their free Community Event Coordination program, though this year, it starts four months earlier than usual.

The group will select up to 12 young adults who can offer up "energy, creativity, reliability, hard work and a genuine interest in making our community a better place to live and visit," explained LUNA coordinator, Kiran Pal-Pross, in a recent press release. The 10-month program, which begins in late June and runs until April, includes in-class training sessions on topics like event management and marketing, risk management, green events, community engagement, leadership, sponsorship and fundraising, media communications and Whistler Spirit, taught by industry professionals like Maureen Douglas and Sue Eckersley.

"The program usually begins at the start of the ski season and ends with Lunafliks," explained Pal-Pross. "It's now been flipped, so graduation will take place at the natural end of the ski season. This makes it easier for our crew members who are from outside of Canada."

Trainees will also assist with LUNA events, gradually taking on more responsibility until they are capable of coordinating an event on their own.

Application forms can be found at www.lunawhistler.com . They must be submitted by Friday, June 19.

Get discovered this summer

If you missed out on LUNA's Battle of the Bands competition a few months ago, here's another chance to strut your stuff on stage this summer: the Niagara Parks Commission is hosting youDiscover, a nation-wide search for the best musicians in Canada.

The Parks Commission has teamed up with inMusic.ca, Orange Lounge Recordings, Falls Avenue Entertainment Complex, Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Molson and the Maid of the Mist to host a summer concert series designed to unearth the best undiscovered musical talent from Canada and New York State.

They're looking for 28 bands to play at the historic Oakes Garden theatre in Niagara Falls for a shot at a recording contract from Orange Lounge Recordings, a complete band makeover and the chance to become the opening act for a nationally-broadcast New Year's Eve show in Niagara Falls. Competition concerts will be hosted on Wednesday and Friday evenings starting on July 8th and continuing through August. Fans will pick the top four groups to compete in the finals by voting at the performances or online.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, June 26. Visit www.youdiscover.ca for application details.
