WEST VANCOUVER — Justin Trudeau is the new Prime Minister of Canada.

Trudeau’s Liberals have won a majority government in Canada's 42nd election.

Votes are still being counted, but the Liberals are hovering around the 190-seat mark — well above the majority threshold of 170 seats in the House of Commons.

The momentum carried over to the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, where Pam Goldsmith-Jones defeated incumbent Conservative MP John Weston.

“It feels fantastic. It really is exciting to be able to contribute from the West Coast of B.C. to the country,” Goldsmith-Jones said shortly after addressing a crowd of enthusiastic supporters in West Vancouver.

“I know how hard we worked and we didn’t take our eye off the ball, and we didn’t take the bait with negative ad campaigning and that strategy has proven us out.”

Goldsmith-Jones said she hopes her campaign’s momentum carries over to Ottawa.

“There’s going to be what, 150 brand new MPs?” she said.

“What an extraordinary opportunity for Canadians to bring a fresh approach to government, and I know that we will. That’s the most important thing above all.”
