The Whistler Public Library will get a facelift this year with the construction of a new outdoor space that was made possible by grant funds from the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation.

In total, the library received $52,750 in the final months of 2014 that will go towards the completion of a sun deck and will serve as an entry point to nearby Florence Petersen Park. The Whistler Blackcomb Foundation awarded $250,000 in grants to community organizations across the Sea to Sky in its most recent round of funding.

“The provision of these funds will not only enhance the external library space, it will also allow for an alternate access to the library facility, an additional gateway to the Florence Petersen Park, and increased profile for the Whistler Museum,” said library board chair Mike McCarville in a release. “Library patrons can look forward to enjoying everything from a good read with a picnic lunch, to innovative programming in this new and beautiful space.”

The sun deck was included in original plans for the library and is meant to serve as an extension of the library’s exterior space on good weather days, offering a comfortable place for patrons to enjoy library materials in a natural setting.

Programming is currently being developed for the space, and may include live music, public readings, small performances, outdoor films and gardening workshops.

The public is invited to share programming ideas on the library’s Facebook page.

Construction on the sun deck is scheduled for completion in the spring.
