While many of the top Whistler Valley Snowboard Club members were away competing in the B.C. Snowboard Associations provincial series at Mount Seymour, the Nike Snowboard Cross last weekend was wide open. However, the WVSC athletes who stayed behind did manage to secure more than their fair share of the glory.
Officials did throw a few new jumps into the mix since the previous weeks snowboard cross, but kept the turns tight. Although it warmed up for the contest after a week of wind and frigid temperatures, the course was hard and fast.
In the Junior Open 12 and Under brackets, WVSC rider Max King finished first, followed by Jack Lundon, Eloise Lee, and Bo Wilson of Team Wigglestooth.
The Junior Girls 13 to 15 cross went to Katelyn Scott and Christen Young of the WVSC and locals Stephanie Just and Suzie Zabilka. In the junior guys, locals Reid Johnston and Jeremy Caverly finished first and third while WVSC riders Grady Widdess and James Crowe took second and fourth.
In the Amateur Women 16 and Over, it was all locals, starting with Jennifer Burt in first, followed by Mai Ishii, Heather Metz and Alison Pasemko. The amateur mens cross went to Christian Pepin of Fernie. Locals Chad Kolcze and Kazumasa Nishio were second and third and Kyle Cuthiel of the WVSC was fourth.
In the Pro Women, local Shirley Caron was first, followed by Krista Hoffs, terrain park ranger Liz Morland, and Katie Morgan. The Pro Men were led by locals Brody Petersen and Perry Bizyk, Jason Chapman of Garibaldi Highlands, and local Sean Buck.
The final Nike Snowboard Cross will take place this weekend, on Feb. 24. Pre-registration is recommended at Guest Relations or by calling 932-3434.
