Losing three straight

Tourism spending in Canada fell 1.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2009. This marked the third straight quarter of losses, the longest set of consecutive decreases since 2001, when tourism was markedly affected by the events of September 11th.

This marked the third straight quarter of losses, the longest set of consecutive decreases since 2001, when tourism was markedly affected by the events of September 11th. Non-resident tourism demand, (-5.7 per cent) posted the sharpest decline since the SARS outbreak during the second quarter of 2003. Meanwhile, tourism spending by Canadians also edged down (-0.1 per cent).

Tourism employment fell 0.4 per cent in the first quarter, driven by job losses in the travel services, food and beverage services and air transportation industries. However, the number of jobs advanced in the accommodation and recreation & entertainment industries.
