Markez upsets Jarmula in Squamish MOMAR

After years of dominating the Squamish Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race (MOMAR), Revelstoke's Bart Jarmula found himself almost seven minutes back of Vancouver's John Markez at the first Checkpoint.

After years of dominating the Squamish Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race (MOMAR), Revelstoke's Bart Jarmula found himself almost seven minutes back of Vancouver's John Markez at the first Checkpoint. He made all of that time back on the orienteering stage, and the two racers yo-yo'ed the lead for a while until Markez took over to finish the 50 km Enduro course in four hours, 14 minutes and 22 seconds. Jarmula was second in 4:18:44 and Adrian Lasalie-Lowe of Squamish third in the men's solo race.

Placing third overall and first in the Men's Team of Two category were veterans Gary Robbins and Todd Nowack, who completed the course in 4:26:01.

Team 2 Slow - Whistler's Kevin Hodder and L.J. Wilson of Squamish - were second in the category in 4:36:11, followed by Fresh Air Fitness (Matthew Gustafson and Loren Stewart).

The top solo female racer was Lina Augaitis, formerly of Whistler and currently of Vancouver. She finished the course in 5:30:20. Not far back was Lucy Eykamp of North Vancouver in 5:31:27. Sara Seads of Courtney was third in 5:37:48.

The top Co-ed Team of Two were Where's My Sherpa?, with Michelle Steel and Shawn O'Toole finishing the course in 6:01:39.

Tall and Small from Victoria were second in the category in 6:17:47, while Team oomingmak - Whistler's Alan and Nancy MacConnachie - were third in 6:31:30.

In the Female Team of Two category the top team were the Shammers, with Shannon Collier Goetsch and Pamela Skean of Squamish placing first in 7:08:36. In second were Sugar and Spice in 7:24:35, followed by TBA - Cathey Jensen of Squamish and Carolyn Kelly-Smith of Vancouver in 7:18:21.

In Male Team of Four the top foursome were the Death Riders of Death in 5:16:56 (Ryan Clozza, Barry Duplantis, Jesse Wheeler and Trevor Lang. The Squamish team Live To Tell was second in 5:29:11. They would have placed first by almost two minutes but received a 15-minute penalty for riding on the highway. Slowmar were third in 7:02:48.

In the Co-ed Team of Four category the first team was Tag, You're It! of Whistler. The team included Leanne Fitzpatrick, Jayde Quilty, Tara Geach and Marcus Waring, completing the course in 6:46:46. Next up were TRIOBA in 6:48:36 and the Treng Hillbilles in 6:12:42.

Several Whistler athletes also took part in the Enduro race, which included trekking, trailing running, 35 km of mountain biking and a rappel from the top of the Stawamus Chief.

Michael Conway placed fifth in the men's solo race in 5:03:55.

David Viitakangas was one spot back in 5:09:07, and it would have been a close 12 second race if he wasn't penalized five minutes for a missing whistle.

Over two dozen racers from the Squamish area participated as well.

Brandon Hofmarks completed the men's solo race in 5:37:34.

Rua Reed was fourth among solo women in 5:52:00, with Meghan Thompson one spot back in 6:03:55.

The Goonies, Joel Douglas and Sean Douglas, were fourth in the Male Team of Two race in 5:51:25.

Team Squampton, Mike Rafferty and Paul Chapman, were 13 th in that category in 7:34:03.

Three Squamish racers were on Take a Peak in the Co-ed Team of Four category, finishing sixth in 8:05:02. They were Mitchell Perepalkin, Tera Rhodes and James Duffy, joining Ewen Clark of Edmonton.

The Sport category included a 30 km course and was open to teams of two only.

The 9 O'Clock Ninjas, Kealy Sweet and Heather Macintosh of Squamish placed first in the Female Team of Two race in 5:03:33. Also from Squamish were Heather Bell and Stephanie Doran Veevers racing as Death Before DFL, and completing the course in 5:25:02.

The fastest two men in the race were Fatter and Slower, Kevin Reynolds and Scott Simser of Vancouver, in 4:26:49. Fiddy and Faddy, Marcie Reinhart and Mike Moseschi of North Vancouver, won the co-ed category in 5:13:24.

Adventure racer Jen Segger set both the Endurance and Sport courses, using a variety of new and classic trails to keep things interesting. Just over 200 racers took part this year.
