Martinis for the cure

Moe Joe’s hosting End Breast Cancer fundraiser

Moe Joe’s is hosting a martini party with a purpose this Monday evening.

The soiree is serving as a fundraiser for a team of local women participating in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer walk, which takes place in Vancouver Aug. 19-21.

Money raised from the 60 km walk will be donated to the B.C. Cancer Foundation.

The Whistler-Blackcomb team consists of Shauna Peachman, Chandra Eyton, Jennifer Rushton, Whitney Reynolds, Melanie Bradley, Cathy Owen, Kerri Gamble and Terri Ross, who have cited various reasons for participating.

"I lost my dad to cancer in 1994 and not a day goes by that I don’t miss him," Owen said in a written statement. "If I can help one person never to have to feel that way, about a parent, a sibling or a friend, then I have made all the difference in the world."

The team’s goal is to raise $16,000.

Monday’s event has a black tie/fancy dress theme and features six martini stations presided over by six "celebrity" bartenders. The $20 ticket includes a martini from each station and entry into a draw for prizes which include a 2005-06 Whistler-Blackcomb ski pass, skis, a snowboard and a variety of gift certificates.

Moe Joe’s owner Andy Flynn has expressed interest in making the charity martini party an annual event.

Tickets are available in advance by calling 604-938-7540.
