Well-known businessman William Maurice Young passed away last week at the age of 75. Maury Young is described as patriarch of the Young and Barker families who owned Whistler Mountain for 17 years before the Intrawest merger in 1996. Maury served as president of the Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation for several years before handing the reins over to son Charles. Those who worked with Young say he was a true gentleman and a highly-respected and ethical businessman. Bob Dufour, who was with the Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation for more than two decades, worked with Young for several years. Dufour, now operations director for Whistler-Blackcomb, said he will remember Young as someone who related to, and respected, people from all walks of life. "He related to everyone regardless of status... the lift mechanics and lift operators... everyone liked him. He was a very, very warm and sincere individual. I will miss him for that," said Dufour. "I learned a lot having the opportunity to work with someone like that. A true gentleman and a mentor." Young will also be remembered for his exceptional commitment to his community, both locally and on a more global scale. Before his position in Whistler, Young worked at the Finning Tractor and Equipment Company from 1947 until 1986. He served as Finning CEO for 25 of those years. Young, a UBC Bachelor of Commerce graduate, also served as a director on a wide variety of industrial, financial, educational and community boards and committees. Dufour said Young, a very private man, contributed millions to a variety of causes.
