McIvor, Bilodeau among athletes celebrating Canada Day weekend in Whistler

Twelve Olympic and Paralympic athletes have been confirmed for the July 1 Canada Day celebration in Whistler.

The athletes will be recognized at a special ceremony in Village Square Thursday afternoon, following the annual Canada Day parade through the village.

Athletes confirmed to attend include: Ashleigh McIvor, Davey Barr, Julia Murray, Justin Lamoureux, Lindsay Debou, Maelle Ricker, Matt Hallat, Mike Janyk, Morgan Perrin, Rob Fagan, Robbie Dixon and Tyler Mosher.

The athletes will be recognized with a unique gift produced by First Nations artist Corrine Hunt, who will be at the ceremony.

This year's Canada Day celebrations are being billed as a chance to relive the spirit and pride that erupted during the 2010 Olympics and Paralympics. The day starts with a pancake breakfast and ends with fireworks. The celebration continues Friday and Saturday with tours of the Whistler Sliding Centre, free outdoor concerts, the Dragon Boat Festival at Rainbow Park and the final stage of the B.C. Bike Race.

All 2010 Winter Games Olympians and Paralympians, as well as torchbearers and VANOC volunteers, have been invited to experience Whistler Canada Day 2010, participate in the parade and join in the fun.

Highlights for July 1 include:

Upper Village

• 9-11 a.m. - By donation pancake breakfast hosted by Whistler Community Services

• 9-Noon - 30% discount off a la carte activities at the Adventure Zone at the base of Blackcomb Mountain

• 10 a.m. - Peak Performance Dance Force. Two dance numbers by Whistler dancers that are sure to get toes tapping and the audience on their feet!

Whistler Village

• Noon - Canada Day parade starts in Town Plaza and winds along Village Stroll, ending at Mountain Square.

• 2-2:30 - Canada Day Ceremony (cake) hosted by the Whistler Chamber of Commerce in Village Square

• 2:30-3 - Athlete recognition ceremony in Village Square

• 3-4 p.m. - Athlete meet and greet in Village Square

• 4-5 p.m. - Spirit of the West concert in Village Square

FREE Evening in Rebagliati Park

7:30 p.m. - late

Bring your blanket for an enchanted evening with the whole family. Enjoy local music, arts and a film under the stars and finish the night off with fireworks. There will be fun for kids of all ages from bocce balls, croquet, hula hoops and more.

• 9:30 p.m. FREE outdoor film screening of Blades of Glory (PG 13)

(In case of rain, the event will be moved to Millennium Place)

• 10:15 Fireworks (can be viewed from Rebagliati Park and Skiers Plaza)

On Friday, July 2 Village Square will be the site of concerts by Jon Shrier (3-4 p.m.) and Chilliwack (4-5 p.m.) Olympic gold medalist Alex Bilodeau will be in the square from 5 to 6 p.m.

On Saturday, July 3 Rachel Thom will play Village Square from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by Delhi 2 Dublin from 4 to 5 p.m.
