Latest census shows Whistler is still young, still lonely
If you ask anyone why they live in Whistler, most people would probably tell you it’s the lifestyle – powder up to your armpits in the winter, a world class mountain playground in the summer, fresh air to breathe, parties every night, and good energy all around.
As long as meeting members of the opposite sex isn’t on your agenda, Whistler delivers. According to the latest 2001 census release from Statistics Canada on sex and age, the odds are stacked against guys in this town.
The most recent census data found that there are 121.6 men for every 100 women in Whistler. That ratio is second in Canada only to Rockwood, Manitoba, where there are 122.6 men for every 100 women. That’s out of a list of more than 6,000 municipalities.
Don’t despair just yet. The female population of Whistler increased 27.5 per cent between 1996 and 2001 census reports, compared to a 21.2 per cent increase in the male population.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is White Rock with an average of 80.4 men for every 100 women. Don’t brush up on the pick-up lines just yet, however, as that disparity is credited to the older population of the town and the fact that women live more than five years longer than men, on average.
White Rock is the second oldest municipality in B.C., next to Qualicum Beach, with an average age of 50.9. Qualicum Beach had an average age of 58.9.
Whistler also made the list as one of the youngest towns in Canada, ranked 18 th overall with an average age of 30.2 in 2001. That’s 1.1 years older than the 1996 Whistler census, but 7.5 years younger than the current national average.
The youngest town in Canada is Mackenzie, Alberta with an average age of just 22. Peace River is the youngest municipality in B.C. and eighth on the list with an average age of 28.7. Fort St. John is 14 th on the list.
The Sex and Age release is the second of eight 2001 census releases from Statistics Canada. The next release, due in October, is on relationships – marriages, common-law relationships, and divorce rates.
