The $14.7 million transformation of the mining museum in Britannia is paying off with the museum picking up two prestigious awards.

The Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia (AME BC) and the B.C. Museum Association (BCMA) have honoured the Britannia Mine Museum on Highway 99.

AME BC gave the museum the Award for Social and Environmental Responsibility while the BCMA honoured the museum's executive director with the award of merit.

"It is a huge honour to have the Museum recognized by our museum and mining peers with these two awards," said Kirstin Clausen, Executive Director of the Britannia Mine Museum. "I remember thinking our original vision of redeveloping our enormous site might have seemed impossible in the beginning."

Clausen was recognized for her leadership and her achievements in fundraising, restoration, museum interpretation and education connected to the refurbishment of the Britannia Mine site.

Through the massive effort to rejuvenate the museum, modern designs were used to give the Museum a modern look while keeping Britannia's historic culture.

"Our success focuses on a balance between entertaining and educating visitors," said Clausen. "I'm proud that the success of the Britannia Mine Museum is something that other Museums are looking to for leadership and inspiration."

The mine at Britannia was once the largest copper producing facility in the United Kingdom. Active mining at Britannia stopped in 1974.
