A multi-agency mock exercise will be conducted at the Whistler Sliding Centre on Wednesday evening between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. to test the hazardous materials emergency response plans of local agencies.

The exercise will simulate an ammonia release on the track at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

No hazardous materials will be used during the exercise.

Participants will include the Whistler Sliding Centre, Resort Municipality of Whistler, Whistler Fire Rescue Service, RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, Whistler Blackcomb and Canadian Wilderness Adventures.

The scenario will allow the participants to test notification and communication procedures, activate a unified command structure, implement protective measures in the event of an actual emergency and test decontamination procedures.

Residents and businesses in the vicinity of Glacier Drive and Glacier Lane will see an increased number of emergency vehicles in the area, and may receive a knock on the door from a uniformed first responder providing educational materials.

A large ammonia release, like the one being simulated on Wednesday, is considered a rare, worst-case scenario event.

The mock exercise will ensure first responders in the area know how to respond in the event of such a scenario.
